Walsall Council axes water coolers
The YamYam 11 Nov 09
Water coolers at hard up Walsall Council are the latest victims of swingeing cuts being made by the cash-strapped authority.

In future, town hall employees in need of a drink will have to use taps in the toilets. Unhappy staff in one department have pointed out that drinking water is not available in the male toilet leading union bosses to check health and safety rules. From now on, male workers will have to ask female colleagues to fetch water from the ladies loo where drinking water is provided.

Walsall Council Executive Director for Resources, Rory Borealis, said: “We are quite clear that water coolers are a non-essential spend and we have therefore taken the decision to stop using them. This is part of our attempts to make sure the impact of the recession has on the council is not felt by the borough’s taxpayers.”

This latest move follows cuts in social care, the closure of day centres, redundancies, reductions in library opening hours and the cancellation of Walsall Illuminations. No figures on potential savings have been made available.
