A scrap dealer caught stealing poles from the side of the M6 has had his van confiscated and crushed – in a new get-tough policy on metal thieves. Self-employed Leonard Gheorge was caught on the southbound carriageway loading metal piping destined for new gantries into his Transit van between junctions 9 and 10...

More than 1,500 campaigners have added their names to a petition calling on Walsall Council to save the borough's oldest pub. The authority has already been forced to shell out for emergency repairs, which the owners of The Bell Inn, in Willenhall, failed to carry out.

Campaigners claim the only hope is for the council to order an enforced sale, whereby the pub would be sold at public auction in order for the authority to recoup the cash it has paid out for repairs...
