Anyone who is currently drinking any kind of beverage may wish to take a few seconds to swallow and place their cup somewhere safe. What you’re about to read may well make you splutter…

Do you want any cash back?
The Plastic Hippo 24 Mar 10
The hippo must offer a humble apology to the unfortunate people held up in the checkout queue at Morrisons today. It is hard enough to manoeuvre a disability scooter or shopping trolley occupied by a wailing child through the groves of “value” lager and oven chips and the last thing consumers need is a two tonne semi-aquatic quadruped lumbering down the cake and pastries aisle and then holding up the checkout queue...

Bill Bryson writes with great passion and anger about the English countryside, (which usually only makes it on to the political radar when some red-coated, red-faced herberts are demanding their natural born civil liberty to carry out acts of barbarism on animals). Jury still out on New Deal?
Express & Star 20 Mar 10
Set up under Tony Blair’s government in 1999 and 2001 the New Deal schemes were given 10 years to turn around some of the country’s most deprived areas and raise thousands of people out of poverty. The Black Country has three of the schemes - All Saints and Blakenhall Community Development (ABCD) in Wolverhampton, the Greets Green Partnership in West Bromwich and Walsall’s New Deal. But did Labour’s New Deal for Communities do the job?

There's gold in them thar hills

I have only two things to say to the people of Brownhills. Firstly, why is your town called Brownhills when it is not brown and lacks hills? Secondly, I’m sorry but I don’t think that the Staffordshire Hoard should stay in your town. I know that the last point will anger those in your community who are doing their best to improve an area which over the years has been ignored and let run down, but it’s not because you can’t be trusted, its because we can’t trust those who would have control over it...

There's gold in them thar hills
The Mushroom 18 Mar 10
I have only two things to say to the people of Brownhills. Firstly, why is your town called Brownhills when it is not brown and lacks hills? Secondly, I’m sorry but I don’t think that the Staffordshire Hoard should stay in your town. I know that the last point will anger those in your community who are doing their best to improve an area which over the years has been ignored and let run down, but it’s not because you can’t be trusted, its because we can’t trust those who would have control over it...

With a touch of sadness, but no surprise, I noticed on Friday that Rodney, the Walsall Wood fisherman, is still without his fish, somewhat oddly christened ‘Bob’. He’s also been the victim of rather more destructive vandals, who’ve tagged him with spray paint...

Just enough education to perform
The Plastic Hippo 15 Mar 10
The Hippo has never been an avid or regular reader of The Sun. However, the odd discarded copy is sometimes blown across Hatherton Lake and a headline or two will occasionally catch the eye. Setting aside the insensitive “Gotcha” splash over the sinking of the Belgrano, the poisonous “Truth” headline perpetrated by Kelvin MacKenzie following the Hillsborough disaster and a reputation for sexism, homophobia, jingoism and scant regard for facts, the sub-editors at the paper who write the headlines do a very good job...
