After failing to regenerate interest in the ailing Brownhills market, Walsall Council has called a halt to mid-week trading and will relocate stalls from Silver Street to the High Street.
The market closed in July after former owners, Spook Erections Ltd, failed to agree terms on a new lease with the local authority. Walsall Council took control of the market in September but since then the number of stall holders operating in the market has dwindled.
Cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Adrian Andrew confirmed that the council were in negotiations with Tesco who wish to redevelop their nearby Brownhills store. “We took the bold move to resurrect Brownhills market in the summer after it had been left to spiral into a slow decline,” he said.
“We knew that any retail venture at a time of recession was going to be difficult but this was a chance we were willing to take.”
The closure of the Tuesday market and the relocation of the Saturday market makes the long awaited planning application from Tesco more likely. Speaking in June last year, Councillor Andrew said: “What I can add is that there is categorically no link between Brownhills market and the Tesco development.”
