Walsall Wood crucifixion protest halts traffic

Lichfield Road in Walsall Wood was closed during the Tuesday morning rush hour due to what is believed to have been a bizarre protest outside a GP surgery.

Traffic was halted as the emergency services dealt with the incident which involved a partially dressed man seen hanging from a cross attached to a telegraph pole. The road was closed between Boatmans Lane and Salters Road as police and paramedics used a ladder to bring the man down to safety. He was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital to be treated for hypothermia and to undergo a psychiatric assessment. Brigg Ford, spokesman for West Midlands Police, said: “It seems this was a spur of the moment thing he has done, he made clear he did not intend to injure himself or anyone else.

“Partner agencies have been made aware and are investigating what is believed to have been some sort of protest.”

Chris Kowalik of the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called just after 7:30am and paramedics took one man to Walsall Manor Hospital.”

Due to the sensitivity of the case, he offered no further comment.

Lichfield Road was reopened at about 8:25am.
