Third suspected Pitbull seized in Bloxwich

The owner of a suspected dangerous dog was given an unexpected wake-up call during a late-night police raid in Blowxich. Ten officers, some armed with taser guns, removed the animal from a house in Gurney Road.

Police launched Operation Cassat to execute a warrant under Section 52 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. The carrying of taser weapons is a precaution against either the dog, or its owner becoming aggressive. The suspected Pitbull terrier was taken to kennels where it will undergo tests to confirm its breed. If it is found to be a dangerous dog it will be destroyed.

In December, police acting on tip-offs from the public raided a property in Irvine Road and seized an illegal Pitbull. Officers also executed a warrant at the Leathern Bottle pub on Creswell Crescent on 12 September 2009. On this occasion the dog seized was confirmed to be a Pitbull and was subsequently put down. Acting sergeant Jim Hunt from Bloxwich police station said: “This breed is classed as a dangerous dog by the government and as such should not be kept in people’s homes. There have been some well publicised cases where ownership of this kind of animal has gone badly wrong, and we are keen for us not to see this kind of incident locally.

“We take a proactive stance in protecting the public from these breeds and we always urge anyone who believes that a dangerous or illegal dog is being kept in their neighbourhood to contact their local police team, or call the RSPCA.”
