Walsall grit stocks at 50%
Councils in the West Midlands and Staffordshire – running low on grit following some of the most severe winter weather in a century – are being denied emergency supplies, it emerged today.
Wolverhampton City Council has just 600 tons of its winter stockpile of 3,500 tons left. The authority asked for a further 500 tons but will only receive between 250 and 280 tons…

Thousands of burst pipes have been dealt with by councils and housing associations in the Black Country and Staffordshire during the last month – with repair bills running into hundreds of thousands of pounds.
In Walsall, the council’s property services department carried out repairs to 50 buildings. Walsall Housing Group carried out 2,000 more jobs than normal in December, with 500 related to burst pipes…

Anglers and park users are complaining of a “dreadful stench” and are demanding action after thousands of pounds worth of fish are thought to have perished in last month’s sub-zero conditions…

The Express and Star has obviously had a light week for news, as in their continuing drive to lower standards, they’ve been repeating the fear, uncertainty, and doubt from the Daily Fail by going on about condensing boilers, how we’re all forced to install them now, and how unreliable they are, they aren’t as efficient as claimed, and they don’t last.
The Fail threw in a line about how they were a ‘New Labour’ policy too, just to muddy the waters a bit.
Let’s cut through a bit of the crap here…

Churchgoers in the West Midlands making their way to Midnight Mass tonight will be forced to brave record low temperatures amid warnings of more snow to come.
Temperatures in the region will plunge to a low -18C (-0.4F), the lowest recorded this winter which has been the most severe for almost a century.
They will hover between -1C (30F) and -5C (23F) today and on Christmas Day before again plummeting to -18C on Christmas night. Snow and sleet showers are set to return to the region on Boxing Day and Monday…
