Dear Walsall MPs,

I write to appeal for your help in preventing the savage cutting back of Walsall Metropolitan Borough’s exemplary public library and heritage services.

Walsall Council is actively contemplating the closure of up to eight branch libraries and the loss of up to thirty jobs as a result, and their preliminary decisions on this matter will be made in a council cabinet meeting on 17 November. No doubt they are also considering options for making more staff redundant in museums and at the borough’s local history centre, with who knows what consequences for Walsall’s heritage…

I want to start by thanking everyone in the Walsall South constituency for electing me as your MP. I want to serve you all and hope to meet more of you in the days to come.

In the early hours of the morning on May 7, the returning officer, the chief executive of Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council, Paul Sheahan, handed me an envelope.

In it were the instructions for my first week at the House of Commons. I managed to glean from the paperwork that I had to attend an induction week which started on May 10…
