I am sure that I have mentioned several times before that I was born and bred in Walsall. This bond with Walsall, the Black Country and the region as a whole is really important to me.

Wherever I have worked and whatever I have done I have always done everything that I can to defend our region against those from outside that seek to belittle or run us down. I have also taken every available opportunity to work for and to sing the praises of our region.

We are a region that has led the way in innovation. Not only were we the cradle of the industrial revolution our region also gave birth to a system of local government in Birmingham that was later to be copied across the World. We have also, over the years, been one of the powerhouses of the labour and trade union movement…

Drivers on London Midland trains are to strike on 23 December in a row over pay and conditions, it has been announced.

The union Aslef said its members had backed a campaign of industrial action. Aslef official Mick Whelan said it had been trying to “harmonise the conditions of drivers” from two firms which merged to form London Midland.

Workers at Jaguar Land Rover, including employees at two plants in the West Midlands, have voted overwhelmingly to accept a deal including a two-year pay rise which union leaders said would secure their jobs for a decade.

Unite said 74% of workers at Castle Bromwich and Solihull, along with Merseyside plant Halewood, accepted the deal which will see pay increase by 5% this year and by RPI inflation plus 0.5% the following year…

Business leaders today called for an immediate freeze in the public sector pay bill under moves to control public finances. The CBI said there could still be increases for frontline staff and the lowest paid, but argued that the total pay bill should not increase for the next two years.

The business group said pay freezes had been commonplace in private firms during the recession, leading to a 0.9% fall in average pay last year, but wages had grown by 2.8% in the public sector…
