The number of job losses planned at councils in England and Wales because of Government spending cuts has increased to over 37,000 in recent weeks, a new study has revealed.
The GMB union said 27 local authorities had announced or threatened staff losses, with many more set to follow suit as the scale of their budget cuts becomes known.

The scale of the effect on councils of the Government’s public spending cuts have become clear with a report that almost 30,000 jobs have been threatened, with thousands of positions across the West Midlands at risk.

Walsall threaten 8,400 staff
A growing number of councils were treating their workforce like “dirt” by issuing statutory notices warning of redundancies as part of spending cuts, union leaders have claimed.
The GMB said local authorities including Birmingham, Sheffield, Walsall and Croydon were holding a “loaded pistol” to the heads of staff by forcing them to accept changes to pay and conditions or lose their jobs…
