Saddlers seal great point
League One basement side Walsall staged a great fightback to earn a 3-3 draw with Tranmere at Prenton Park on Saturday.
Walsall went ahead with 32 minutes gone when Paul Marshall’s corner was cleared into the path of Matthew Richards who lashed the ball in from the edge of the box…

It seems that I’ve had to write the epitaph on too many managers since I first started this writing for websites business, but it it a relief to see the back of Chris Hutchings.
I know our esteemed Chairman liked Hutchings, but, it has to be said, his was a brand of football I, personally, would rather do without. The fact that we resorted to hoofball far, far too often was never going to endear him to Walsall supporters used to teams over the years willing to play the game properly. That wouldn’t have been too bad, if not for the fact that we looked tactically naïve and unable to switch when the circumstances dictated.
All of that means that Hutchings has left us with a record of Played 98, Won 31, Drawn 24, Lost 43. That’s a win percentage of just 31.63 and a points per game average of a measely 1.19. That, over a season, is 54 points, or near relegation form and that’s after finishing 10th last season. That alone tells you how terrible we have been in 2010/2011. It is also worse than Merson and Mullen!
So, off we go on Saturday to Tranmere…

Hutchings under fire after heavy loss
Tranmere lifted themselves off the bottom of League One with an easy win 4-1 at the expense of fellow strugglers Walsall who crashed to their fifth home league defeat of the season, putting severe pressure on manager Chris Hutchings.
Walsall had little to offer going forward and were even worse in the second half, so it was no surprise when, in the 59th minute, home defender Andrew Davies, on loan from Stoke City, lost possession easily leaving Enoch Showunmi to run on and shoot low past the keeper for number two…

Wolves drop us in it
Problems for the beleaguered Chris Hutchings this week, as Walsall have yet another must win game against a team struggling at the wrong end of the table. This time, though, it’s partly of his own making, as one of his first choice midfielders David Davis, is a loanee who has been recalled by his club.
I suppose the first thing to do is congratulate Davis for his call up to the Wolves first team squad for the trip to Stamford Bridge at the weekend, although I have to say, I haven’t seen enough from the youngster to suggest he’s ready for that baptism of fire yet. I think Mick McCarthy might have been better leaving him with us a little longer. They do have a midfield crisis however and the word is they may be willing to let him return when that clears up. It does leave Hutchings with problems, however, as Taundry has only just returned to training and may not be risked. Marshall would then seem to be the only other option in the middle of the park.
As for the rest of the team,

Richard Taundry is chomping at the bit to take out his injury frustrations on Tranmere Rovers in Saturday’s big clash at the foot of League One.
Walsall entertain basement side Rovers desperate for a victory to drag themselves out of the bottom four – they slid back into the relegation zone after last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Dagenham and Redbridge.
And Taundry – out since the end of August with a knee injury – hopes to make his return in time for the clash…

Martin Devaney insists the “onus” is on Walsall to extend their mini-revival into something more substantial, starting with victory at home to Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
The Saddlers will face the Merseyside club still in the League One relegation zone but with their points tally at least moving again courtesy of four from the last two games against Exeter and Dagenham…

The Saddlers had to come from behind to clinch their second double of the season because Tranmere had been the better side in the opening stages and took the lead after 27 minutes when a low cross from Gareth Edds was deflected past Gilmartin by defender Manny Smith.
Smith made amends for that 10 minutes before half-time when he moved up for a corner taken by Steve Jones and sent a downward header just inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
Byfield notched his ninth goal of the season in the 70th minute after a dazzling run took him past two defenders before he finished with a clinical shot past Luke Daniels…
