Motorists across the West Midlands waste an incredible 250,000 hours a day stuck in traffic jams. The figures amount to an hour in jams each week for EVERY one of the 1.6 million car drivers in the region.
This number clearly includes many drivers who don’t travel at peak times when most of the tailbacks take place, meaning that proportionally people regularly travelling to work face a much longer delays…

Concerned traders and shoppers on Bloxwich High Street have been given an assurance by Walsall Council that parking will still be available in the town after the introduction of double red lines that will prohibit cars parking. The £3million scheme will offer a 15 space increase in on-street parking provision.
The Samuel Street car park will be expanded and parking spaces will be made available in Elmore Row, Victoria Avenue, Park Road and Harrison Street. It is not known if the residents of those streets have been consulted over the proposal. The scheme also promises improvements at the junction of Bell Lane and Stafford Road and the introduction of a new pedestrian crossing. The project is part of the A34 North red route scheme which aims to reduce traffic congestion in the borough.
Mike Tichford, Walsall Council’s assistant director for regeneration, said: “Congestion costs the West Midlands economy £2 billion a year. Bloxwich High Street is one of the most choked shopping streets in the borough and we are determined to act to tackle this. We’ve spent a lot of time talking and listening to Bloxwich High Street businesses. Let’s be quite clear about this. We are keeping parking and loading bays on the High Street. We’ve always taken the approach that our red routes will help keep traffic moving but will be designed taking into account the views of those who live and work there. Traders have asked for us to keep parking and we’ve done just that.”
The improvements to Bloxwich High Street are due to start sometime in the summer and will last until early autumn. Jackson Civil Engineering, Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd and GF Tomlinson Group are the contractors employed to carry out the work.

For a second day, drivers using the M6 faced long delays during the morning rush-hour as two more accidents occurred in the road-works between Junction 8 and Junction 10a.
Just 24 hours after three separate collisions caused 20 mile tailbacks on the motorway and gridlock on surrounding roads, further traffic chaos was caused by more accidents. At 6.30am, a crash between a lorry and a car on the southbound carriageway between Junction 10 and Junction 9 led to a lane closure and at about 7.10am, three cars were involved in a collision on the northbound carriageway between Junction 8 and Junction 9.
Work started more than a year ago to widen the motorway and use the hard shoulder as a fourth lane. Residents in Murdoch Way, Beechdale woke up one morning last April to find diggers tearing up the trees that separated their gardens from the M6. In September, narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit were introduced on one of the busiest sections of motorway in Europe. The hard shoulder is not expected to be available to motorists until at least 2012.

A series of crashes brought rush hour misery to thousands of drivers using the motorway system around Walsall on Wednesday morning. The Highways Agency reported delays of 90 minutes and traffic was at a standstill in 20 mile tailbacks.
The first accident happened on the M6 between Junction 10 in Walsall and Junction 10a for the M54 just after 6am. Two lorries and a car collided on the northbound carriageway in the notorious hard should road-works causing two lanes to be closed for four hours. Traffic was stationary as far south as Junction 4 at Coleshill.
A second accident between a lorry and a car occurred at 6.50am on the M5 between Junctions 3 and 4 resulting in a lane closure. At 7.20am another collision involving a lorry and a car happened near Junction 9 on the southbound M6 near Wednesbury causing tailbacks to Hilton Park Services.
The chaos spread to the surrounding roads that approach the motorway junctions. The Black Country Route was at a standstill between Willenhall and Junction 10 and long queues quickly formed on the Wolverhampton Road coming out of Walsall. Traffic on Bescott Road also suffered disruption on the approach to Junction 10.
