Saddlers succumb to Swindon

Walsall suffered a disappointing day at the Banks’s Stadium, as a jittery start cost them dearly.

The Saddlers named an unchanged side from the defeat at Rochdale, with Macken and Byfield partners up front. Nicholls returned to the side on the bench.

Walsall made a very scrappy and hesitant start, as Swindon looked dangerous on the attack. It took them just 10 minutes to take the lead, as Sheehan found space from the left and put the ball sweetly past goalkeeper Brain. 0-1. The under fire goalkeeper had an overall much more positive performance than recent matches…

I left for my summer holidays after the Plymouth win feeling relatively optimistic, given a much improved performance, three points and what appeared to have been a couple of good signings. I came back to find that we contrived to lose every game in my absence! What that amounts to is, of course, a club at crisis point, as points and fans drain away.

Granted there have been a couple of good signs, as Jon Macken doesn’t seem to have forgotten where the net is during his various troubles since leaving Preston and Darren Byfield has managed to break his goal drought (and how!), but the problems we are suffering seem to be exactly the same as at the start of the season (and, to be fair, last season), namely a central midfield which is as weak as dishwater and neither creates anything for the strikers, nor gives adequate cover to the defence.

One of the great things in football is the ‘what if’ question – something Walsall have cornered the market in. It allows you to delve into the past and take solace from the fact the team could have done this or could have done that. What if the Saddlers had beaten Yeovil, Gillingham and Charlton at home?…
