The future of speed cameras across the West Midlands is in doubt after councils proposed cutting funding for the controversial scheme.
Leaders of the seven metropolitan councils are recommending axing £250,000 from the amount of money they hand to the West Midlands Road Safety Partnership, the body responsible for locating the cameras which cost £2 million a year to run.
Mike Bird, the Conservative leader of Walsall Council, said many of the 454 speed cameras in the West Midlands were “obsolete”…

The future of old-style speed cameras in the West Midlands has been thrown into question after transport chiefs from councils across the region voted to stop funding them.
Scheduled payments worth £950,000 from local authorities to pay for the speed cameras are to be scrapped for 2011/12 after reductions in Government grants left a shortfall. Councillors on the West Midlands transport sub-committee say the wet film technology used in older cameras is outdated, and claim West Midlands Police are not co-operating in discussing their future…

“War on the Motorist” has become a little soundbite of late: we’ve had Eric Pickles declaring that:
the Government is calling off Whitehall’s war on the motorist
and that boggle-eyed loony George Monbiot stating that:
The only transport war being waged in this country is by motorists – against pedestrians and cyclists
My opinon, as a motorist, car enthusiast, cyclist and pedestrian?
They’re both idiots…

Almost 10,000 motorists were captured speeding by just one camera in the West Midlands over 12 months, figures have revealed.
Police will not say where it is in case of vandalism after 17 were attacked in the last year. They fear cameras may be rendered inoperable, raising the risk of casualties at blackspots…

For years it has been argued by motorists and victims of speed cameras that they have nothing to do with road safety and everything to do with generating revenue.
This has always been denied by politicians, police, local authorities and camera manufacturers who insist they are there for purposes of public safety and that road casualties have reduced since they were introduced.
So lets take a look at some facts and the new information which is conclusive proof that the cameras were there for cash generation:
Firstly, the myth that cameras have reduced road casualties…

Speed, speeding, and speed cameras seems to be in the news a great deal lately. There’s Oxfordshire turning off their cameras, and now Julie Spence, the outgoing chief of Cambridgeshire police is speaking out about the hypocrisy of motorists, who consider speeding as acceptable and change their minds only if they lose a child in a road accident.
There’s some sense in the article, but I’m really starting to take exception to the link these days that the only possible problem with the way someone might drive is related to the posted speed limit at any point.
Driving without care or consideration for other road users is probably among the worst kind of anti-social behaviour in its truest sense, because serious offenders can, and do, kill…

Speed cameras in the West Midlands could be switched off following massive cuts in government funding.
Councillor Tom Ansell, transport chief at Tory controlled Walsall Council said: “I don’t think they do a good job. They don’t catch drink drivers and they provide an excuse for the police not to be out doing the job…
