Business secretary Lord Mandelson claimed today the car scrappage scheme has been a resounding success. Demand for new cars stimulated by the scheme had saved 4,000 jobs, he said, and helped several UK plants retain or reinstate shifts.

The scheme – which closed yesterday – has helped up to 400,000 customers to buy a new car through scrappage since its launch in May 2009. Drivers were offered a £2,00o grant to scrap an old car in exchange for a new to stimulate sales of more environmentally friendly vehicles…
