This week, my daughters, who are in Year six, took their SATs. Despite all the discussion about how stressful a time this can be, I somehow thought my girls — who are laid back, hardy little souls – would sail through. I don’t mean in terms of their academic ability (which I won’t discuss thank you very much) but how tough they would find it to actually get on and do. I naively thought it would be a breeze.
Off they went to school on Monday, as relaxed as they could be, with my words to “just do your best, you know we love you,” ringing in their ears…

Thousands of pupils missed out on sitting the controversial Sats tests as many West Midland primary schools staged a boycott on Monday. A total of 153 of Birmingham’s 277 primary headteachers backed the boycott – and in Walsall, 21 out of 86 schools are not adminstering the tests.
School heads claimed they faced Government pressure and “intimidation” for observing the boycott, staged by the National Union of Teachers and the National Association of Head Teachers…

Tens of thousands of primary school children are set to miss their Sats tests as a boycott kicks off in schools in the West Midlands and across the country.
Rising numbers of schools already confirmed that they will not be administering the tests, and many more who have not informed their local council are expected to take part in the boycott, which is being staged by two teachers’ unions…
