Football: League 1
Michael Beardmore Express & Star 26 Feb 11
Walsall picked up a point in their battle against the drop in a dour stalemate with Rochdale where both keepers were hardly troubled in an affair that had plenty of passion but very little quality.
The Saddlers were the better side in the first half but Jason Price just failed to connect with Tom Williams’ cross as an empty net beckoned.
Alex Nicholls had a decent chance when a weak punch from Owain Fon Williams fell at his feet on the edge of the area but he sent his first-time volley straight at the keeper…

Bescot Stadium, Sat 26 Feb, KO 3pm
A chance to get out of the bottom four presents itself on Saturday, with a game against play off chasing Rochdale. The team will certainly want to get last week’s defeat at Colchester out of their systems and get back on the good run which had seen confidence rise so much.
Of course, expectations have now been raised, with the team just one point from safety, so it was good to see the squad further strengthened this week with the acquisition of Argentinian midfielder Emmanuel Ladesma…

Walsall missed the chance to climb out of the League One drop zone after slipping to a disappointing defeat at Colchester.
A win would have lifted the Saddlers out of the bottom four for the first time in four months but they failed to seriously test United…

A desperately needed win finally came about last night, courtesy of as good a lay off as you’re ever likely to see from Macken and a cool finish from substitute Will Grigg. The team walked off to the strains of the theme from “The Great Escape” and, after this, it’s on.
Up until the goal, it had looked as if the Daggers’ totally unambitious attempt to come for a draw and depend solely on set pieces for any scoring attempt might work out, as everyone seemed to have left their shooting boots at home…

High-flying Bournemouth downed battling Walsall as the Cherries popped the Saddlers’ four-game unbeaten run.
Michael Symes’ 52nd minute strike condemned the hosts to just their third defeat under manager Dean Smith but left them five points from safety in League One.
However, they almost bagged a valuable point in the fifth minute of injury time when Matt Richards’ free kick hit the underside of the bar…

Cumbrians stunned (Video highlights)
Struggling Walsall climbed off the foot of the League One table as they completed their first double of the season in fine style at Brunton Park.
The Saddlers made it four games without defeat thanks to Matt Gill’s first-half close-range strike and a second-half double from the lively Julian Gray.
Carlisle pulled one back in stoppage time through a thumping Peter Murphy header from James Berrett’s corner. But it was too late to save Carlisle from a first home defeat in two months…

Alex Nicholls’ late strike rescued a priceless point for Walsall after a battling display at Notts County.
The winger drove under goalkeeper Stuart Nelson with two minutes left to cancel out Lee Hughes’ 64th minute opener.
The Saddlers were good value for the point but had to fight for every inch, with defenders Oliver Lancashire and Andy Butler outstanding…

Rampant Walsall claimed a League One lifeline after smashing a stunning SIX past relegation rivals Bristol Rovers.
The Saddlers ran riot to lift themselves off the bottom of the table for their first win in seven games and score six in the league for the first time in Banks’s Stadium history…

Darryl Westlake’s first senior goal earned Walsall a valuable point in their fight for survival against Oldham.
Filipe Morais’ first-half strike dented the hosts’ hopes but right-back Westlake’s 61st minute drive nabbed a draw.
However, the point failed to lift the Saddlers off the bottom of the table and they remain nine points from safety after Swindon’s goalless draw with Tranmere…

Dean Smith’s first game in full-time charge of Walsall ended in gallant defeat as the Saddlers lost at Exeter.
A fine performance failed to deliver at least a point after Smith’s men spurned a number of golden opportunities.
It kept them bottom of League One but the manager would have been encouraged with the fighting display from his side…
