Walsall boss Dean Smith hopes ‘wildcard’ Argentinian signing Emmanuel Ledesma can provide the flair to steer the Saddlers to League One safety.

The 22-year-old former Genoa midfielder was unable to gain international clearance in time to feature on Saturday as an uninspired Walsall side fought out a dour goalless draw with Rochdale…

Walsall manager Dean Smith has hailed the input of his closest advisors Jon Whitney and Chris Nicholl into the team’s recent revival as they battle to beat relegation from League One.

In particular, the Saddlers boss appreciates his aides’ willingness to pipe up when they think he is wrong.

When Smith took over as manager in January, Whitney immediately stepped up from physio to assistant boss while Nicholl soon came back into the fold as defending coach.

Walsall picked up a point in their battle against the drop in a dour stalemate with Rochdale where both keepers were hardly troubled in an affair that had plenty of passion but very little quality.

The Saddlers were the better side in the first half but Jason Price just failed to connect with Tom Williams’ cross as an empty net beckoned.

Alex Nicholls had a decent chance when a weak punch from Owain Fon Williams fell at his feet on the edge of the area but he sent his first-time volley straight at the keeper…

Football: League 1

Neil Ravenscroft UTS 25 Feb 11

Bescot Stadium, Sat 26 Feb, KO 3pm

A chance to get out of the bottom four presents itself on Saturday, with a game against play off chasing Rochdale. The team will certainly want to get last week’s defeat at Colchester out of their systems and get back on the good run which had seen confidence rise so much.

Of course, expectations have now been raised, with the team just one point from safety, so it was good to see the squad further strengthened this week with the acquisition of Argentinian midfielder Emmanuel Ladesma…

Walsall have today swooped to land Argentinian attacking midfielder Emmanuel Ledesma on a short term deal until the end of the season.

Ledesma signs after being spotted playing for Brighton reserves earlier this season. He was offered a trial with Walsall and has been successful in negotiating a move to the Banks’s. He is expected to make his debut against Rochdale on Saturday, subject to international clearance…

Respect for referees has been known to be as fragile as Walsall’s survival hopes.

Criticism, abuse and the constant questioning of their authority makes for a lonely profession.

The dwindling numbers of grass roots officials is testimony to that, but the challenge doesn’t faze Walsall skipper Andy Butler…

Mark Jones Express & Star 25 Feb 11

So the misfortune of others this week has seen the gap to safety for the Saddlers reduced to one solitary point.

The boardroom conversation at Plymouth that concluded with ‘Gentlemen, things are desperate, there’s only one man who can sort this out . . . Peter Ridsdale’ must have truly been something to behold.

While their fate has given us a huge helping hand, I do sympathise with the plight of Argyle fans who are probably now worrying as much about whether they will have to be starting up AFC Plymouth as they are about relegation…

Michael Beardmore Advertiser 24 Feb 11

Saddlers boss Dean Smith has implored his side not to let ‘one blip’ spoil their survival bid as League One surprise packages Rochdale come to town this weekend.

Walsall lost 2-0 at Colchester last Saturday in possibly their worst display since Smith took charge at the turn of the year.

That meant they were still three points off safety – until, that is, Plymouth Argyle were deducted ten points by the Football League on Monday for going into administration…
