A series of crashes brought rush hour misery to thousands of drivers using the motorway system around Walsall on Wednesday morning. The Highways Agency reported delays of 90 minutes and traffic was at a standstill in 20 mile tailbacks.
The first accident happened on the M6 between Junction 10 in Walsall and Junction 10a for the M54 just after 6am. Two lorries and a car collided on the northbound carriageway in the notorious hard should road-works causing two lanes to be closed for four hours. Traffic was stationary as far south as Junction 4 at Coleshill.
A second accident between a lorry and a car occurred at 6.50am on the M5 between Junctions 3 and 4 resulting in a lane closure. At 7.20am another collision involving a lorry and a car happened near Junction 9 on the southbound M6 near Wednesbury causing tailbacks to Hilton Park Services.
The chaos spread to the surrounding roads that approach the motorway junctions. The Black Country Route was at a standstill between Willenhall and Junction 10 and long queues quickly formed on the Wolverhampton Road coming out of Walsall. Traffic on Bescott Road also suffered disruption on the approach to Junction 10.
