Supporters of an ‘over-arching’ structure to coordinate the work of the six Local Enterprise Partnerships bidding to replace AWM are fighting a rearguard action to keep their proposal alive.

Yesterday, Business Secretary Vince Cable repeated his position that responsibility for strategic leadership of key industrial sectors and business support would reside in Whitehall, with a minimum of local management. This seemed to rule out a proposal from Business Voice WM and local authority body West Midlands Councils, who want to see another tier of co-ordination to oversee cross-regional issues that affect all the LEPs in the West Midlands…

Umbrella group Business Voice WM is pressing the government to create an over-arching mechanism to co-ordinate the activities of the six LEPs that are expected to replace Advantage West Midlands.

Business and council leaders have backed plans to create local agencies to promote economic growth – but insisted a regional approach will still be needed too.

Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles has told councils and business leaders including chambers of commerce to draw up plans for local enterprise partnerships by September 6.

The partnerships will replace regional development agencies, the large regional bodies created by Labour. There are likely to be six enterprise partnerships covering the West Midlands region, which was previously served by a single agency…

Crime is costing West Midlands businesses a fortune – more than £1.5 billion in the last seven years – a new report has revealed.

Now efforts to combat the problem are to be stepped up with the issue of a blueprint for future action.

The Action Plan has been prepared by Business Voice WM’s Regional Business Crime Forum at the instigation of Minister for the West Midlands, Ian Austin MP.

The JSIB will make the key decisions on economic development and regional planning from April 2010 after the abolition of the West Midlands Regional Assembly, and will also influence how Government money coming to the region is spent from next spring…
