I had this press release from the Walsall Council media control bunker drawn to my attention today, (Thanks, Edditer!) so I thought I’d share it with you readers.
It’s good to see money being spent of facilities for kids in the area once again – we’ve now got a shiny new playground on land off Whitehorse Road, a great skatepark upgrade in Walsall Wood, and this looks set to be a fine project, too. Let’s hope it’s being executed better than the mess that was made of a similar project in The Butts recently…

In my little area of Walsall, we kinda get looked over by Walsall council. So it I was surprised when in February the council started to build a playarea for the kids on land it owns and which had been left to decay for sometime.
That came out of the blue, with no local consultation, but ‘Well done’ I thought, ‘They’re not totally useless.’ It opened in March with a piece in the local press saying what a great job the council are doing.

Buried deep in the woeful Walsall council web site is a report entitled “Resident Consultation Activity Findings”. The results of this survey gives a snapshot of how residents regard the borough and what needs to be done to improve our quality of life. You can find it in the folder that also contains details of councillor expenses, senior council officer salaries, the level of profit being amassed by private companies through “outsourcing” deals and probably the launch codes for intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Surveys are wonderful things that can be used by those who control the purse strings to vindicate their sometimes eccentric behaviour and give our ruling elite the opportunity to tell us how much we love them. Walsall council is particularly adept at interpreting “consultations” to justify their misbegotten schemes of municipal vandalism and frequently quote the voice of the people when they decide to do something stupid. However, the picture painted by the Resident Consultation Activity Findings has been locked away in the attic to gather dust in perpetuity…

Fed-up residents called out West Midlands Police ten times and 30 reports of anti-social behaviour were logged by Walsall Council over an eight-week period…

It now looks almost certain that the proposed adventure style ”Play-Builder” sites at Sneyd Lane, Essington. Greaves Crescent/Nightingale Crescent, Coppice Farm and Pool Hayes Lane, Short Heath will not now go ahead following a massive backlash from local residents…

Plans for a string of 22 new play areas across Walsall for children between the ages of 8 and 13 have descended into a farce. What should have been a “good news story” has resulted in a major backlash from residents who have only recently found out that they were going to have what can only be described as adventure play equipment dumped on their doorsteps…

Already many residents are busy organising petitions objecting to the new “Playbuilder” sites being plonked on their doorsteps, and who can blame them? Children across the borough desperately need more play facilities but lack of consultation is not the way to go about it…
