Football: League 1

Battling Walsall slipped to defeat at Peterborough to leave them eight points adrift of League One safety.

The Saddlers dominated long spells and the result flattered Posh who scored three goals in the final 20 minutes.

But the result will do little for manager Chris Hutchings’ job prospects with the pressure rising…

London Road, Monday 3 January, KO 3pm

As Chris Hutchings quite rightly points out, the Notts County and Charlton performances were ‘chalk and cheese’. Sadly, that’s why we’re going down.

We have to be beating those teams around us if we’re to survive, particularly at home. It is all well and good beating teams such as Charlton, when we go into the game with absolutely nothing to lose. When we’re fighting for our lives, against teams in a similar position to ourselves, it’s then that the points count.

It may well be baffling to you, Chris. To your average Walsall fan, it is too. In the twenty-five games to date, we have lost a staggering fifteen…

Jimmy Walker’s fairytale return to the Banks Stadium this week turned a little sour as Walsall were beaten 3-1 by Peterborough.

The Saddlers legend was hoping for a happy return after signing a short-term deal but he got quite the opposite during a difficult night in WS1…

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of the Saddlers will know there is no stronger insult to be issued around the Banks’s Stadium. In truth, the club’s former player-manager would have loved his team to have been this good.

Sadly, so locked in a trough of mishaps are Chris Hutchings’s side that an improved performance still resulted in a story all too familiar to the denigrated Merson and the current gaffer so far in this season of misery.

At no stage in the game were Walsall ever two goals worse than Peterborough but a 3-1 defeat was their 10th from the last 13 games and, although November has only just arrived, the five-point gap to safety already looks pretty chilling…

Peterborough piled the pressure on Walsall manager Chris Hutchings after downing the spirited Saddlers at the Banks’s Stadium.

The hosts remain bottom of League One despite a lively display, where they matched their title chasing visitors. Defeat – the 10th in 15 games in the league this season – leaves Hutchings on the brink and fans again called for his head during the game…

Walsall striker Darren Byfield has turned up the heat on Peterborough boss Gary Johnson and claimed the pressure is on his former manager – not the Saddlers.

Posh travel to the Banks’s Stadium tonight and Byfield could make his comeback after six weeks out with a knee injury, against the man who released him at Bristol City in 2008.

Johnson had to deny yesterday that he was thinking of quitting Posh following their 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday…

Walsall winger Martin Devaney (ankle) and striker Darren Byfield (knee) will both have late fitness tests. Veteran goalkeeper Jimmy Walker makes his first home appearance after re-signing for the Saddlers on Friday.

Peterborough striker Lee Tomlin returns from suspension but winger George Boyd starts his three-match ban. Centre-back Lewin Nyatanga, who has arrived on loan from Bristol City, is set to make his debut at the expense of either Ryan Bennett or Kelvin Langmead…
