Walsall legend Martin O’Connor left the club, almost certainly for the last time as an employee, this week with no complaints about the fans who had called long and loud for a change of management this season.

Just as we had all given up hope of some decisive action from Walsall Football Club, they go and surprise everyone by sacking manager Chris Hutchings, assistant Martin O’Connor and Hutch’s mate, chief scout David Hamilton.
I could be critical for the sake of it and say it was long overdue but in reality I’m just relieved. Credit must go to chief executive Stefan Gamble for responding to the numerous e-mails that were fired off to him by angry and anxious fans on Monday night…

Martin O’Connor is relishing the battle of trying to lift Walsall out of trouble in League One. The assistant manager has been as frustrated as anyone this season during a taxing time for he and manager Chris Hutchings with flak flying from the fans.
Despite the stunning win at Charlton last Sunday, the Saddlers still have it all to do to climb the table. But O’Connor never shirked a challenge as a player and he is meeting this one head-on as a coach…
