Walsall’s Steve Gethin has revealed how the sad retirement of his brother Darren convinced him not to hang up his gloves and give up on his dream of becoming Midlands champion.

Walsall’s English lightweight champion Martin Gethin will be rooting for old foe John Watson to upset Gavin Rees for the British title.

Walsall featherweight Steve Gethin is to get a second chance at taking the Midlands title from reigning champion Del Rogers.

A mooted English title fight between Rogers and Cradley’s Chris Male will not happen before 2011, after Male confirmed he will not return from a broken hand by the end of the year.

So Gethin will face Rogers for the area title at Birmingham’s Holiday Inn on December 6, the same venue where the two first clashed in February…

Boxing brothers Martin and Steve Gethin are running in this year’s Virgin London Marathon on Sunday to raise money for Cancer Research UK after their mother tragically died from breast cancer four years ago.

The London Marathon – now in it’s 30th year – is one of the top five marathon events in the world and last year attracted some 36,000 runners raising in excess of £40 million for charity.

Neither of the Pleck Boxing Club stars have run a marathon before but they both train regularly and have been on a special diet for this weekend’s event.

Martin added another victory to his boxing record on Friday night when he out-pointed Jon Baguley but now it’s legs not fists he is concentrating on as he gets ready for Sunday.

Anyone wishing to support the Gethin brothers can make a donation on Martin’s Facebook page.

Walsall’s English lightweight champion Martin Gethin has told Stefy Bull to stop wasting his time after his first defence of the title was called off. It’s the second time Bull has pulled out of facing Gethin, with the two first due to meet for the vacant title last December at the Dome before the home fighter pulled out injured.

The Conisbrough challenger has instead committed to fight at the Doncaster Dome on May 21, leaving Gethin with a non-title six rounder against Polish journeyman Arek Malek on April 16…

Martin and his brother Steve, himself a Midland title contender, will be running the London Marathon just nine days after the fight, to raise funds for Cancer Research.
