Walsall have revealed they are yet to speak to any managers about their vacant hot-seat. Two weeks after sacking Chris Hutchings, the Saddlers have started shortlisting the 90 applicants but are no closer to an appointment.

The club have insisted they are in no rush to replace Hutchings, who was axed on January 4, but with the team bottom of League One an appointment is necessary…

Ipswich Town have confirmed that former Walsall manager Chris Hutchings is to become assistant to new manager Paul Jewell.

Hutchings has been Jewell’s right-hand man at Bradford, Wigan and Derby, and succeeded Jewell as manager at both the Bantams and Latics. He was sacked as Walsall boss on January 4, after two years in charge.

Rumours are circulating that Walsall’s hunt for a new manager could soon be over, with former Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Charlton Athletic star Mark Kinsella set to be announced as the replacement for Chris Hutchings.

Kinsella is a free agent following his dismissal as part of the Charlton Athletic backroom staff, after the Addicks decided to part company with their manager Phil Parkinson. He was seen at the game this afternoon, creating speculation that he was about to be appointed as the manager…

A few months ago, in the wake of the 4-1 Tranmere home defeat, I had a conversation with someone who has supported the club for a long time about the possibility of relegation.

Unsurprisingly I was the much more pessimistic of the two, not only about the likelihood of Chris Hutchings leading us into the Football League’s dungeon but also about next season.

I couldn’t subscribe to the view that just because we came straight back up in 2006/07, then a repeat would be a formality…
