Football: League 1

Alex Nicholls’ late strike rescued a priceless point for Walsall after a battling display at Notts County.
The winger drove under goalkeeper Stuart Nelson with two minutes left to cancel out Lee Hughes’ 64th minute opener.
The Saddlers were good value for the point but had to fight for every inch, with defenders Oliver Lancashire and Andy Butler outstanding…

Well, after the heroics of Saturday, the players will have to try for a repeat showing at Notts County tonight.
Despite the 0 – 3 home defeat to County back on New Year’s Day – one of the results which finally put the long overdue nail in Chris Hutchings’s coffin – they are still one of the “target” teams for the Saddlers’ survival bid, sitting precariously in 19th place, just one point above the relegation zone.
Dean Smith could recall Jimmy Walker for the clash. Walker missed Saturday’s 6-1 win over Bristol Rovers due to “family reasons”, but is back in contention, especially with Bevan’s part in the Bristol Rovers’ goal. Granted the initial mistake was Westlake’s, as he lost his man, but Bevan should still have done better with a near post shot, really…

Whether it was a touch of irony, a flash of Black Country black humour or a genuine felicitation it’s hard to say but the message on the front of Walsall’s programme was upbeat: “Here’s to a successful 2011…”
Few of the 3,000-odd home fans present at kick-off viewed that toast with any great confidence, the Saddlers’ 2010 having been increasingly ropy. By half-time, their team 2-0 down and doomed to a seventh defeat in ten home league games, those long-suffering supporters had had virtually the last drop of dogged New Year optimism drained from them.
It took 25 seconds for Walsall’s 2011 to start supplying more anxiety than happiness…

Shambolic Walsall slumped back to the bottom of League One after a catastrophic defeat to Notts County. Devoid of any desire or quality, the Saddlers were comprehensively outplayed by a slick Magpies side – who were only six points ahead of Walsall at the start of play.
Early goals from Craig Westcarr and Lee Miller put them in charge, before former Birmingham defender Krystian Pearce added to Walsall’s woes in the second-half…

A must win game
Well, the undefeated December would look a lot better if it had been over more than one game! The truth of the matter is, of course, that we go into the first game of 2011 in nineteenth place, with fewer points than games played, 6 points shy of safety (thanks to our appalling goal difference).
We are playing a team on that (currently) magic figure of 23 points, who must be considered to be relegation rivals. If ever there was a must win game, then this is it.
The Saddlers should be boosted by the return to fitness of two of their most potent strikers, Jon Macken and Reuben Reid, ahead of facing Notts County…

Walsall have “every confidence” Saturday’s game against Notts County will go ahead. After losing three successive fixtures to the weather, Chris Hutchings’ men are desperate to get back into action to try to continue the recovery they started with two wins from three league games before Christmas.
And their chance to keep building is set to arrive on Saturday in a vital clash with fellow strugglers County…
