As we wrap up in the winter weather, a display at Walsall Museum shows how women managed to keep warm but stay fashionable in the mid-20th century.

The exhibition called ‘A Chill in the Air’ includes winter clothing from the 1920s to the 1960s. The woollen dresses, skirts, jumpers and cardigans are part of the museum’s Hodson Shop collection.

The collection is made up of the unsold stock of a small draper’s shop that traded in Willenhall until about 1970…

Walsall Council gave our little community a nice chance to take a look behind the scenes at the storage facility where treasures are kept that have no exhibition space for them to be shown. It certainly was a great adventure, I found myself transfixed on old radio and media technology and this rather curious Dictaphone cylinder for some reason.

Again this was a great way that the council were engaging with the local social media crowd. You can enjoy more of Walsall Musuem’s pictures on their flickr group, here is a slideshow of the treasures that they have.

I had a busy weekend. On Saturday we went to the black country museum. I don’t know why, but we did. It wasn’t a bad day out. I would have taken some photos on my phone, but I upgraded to iPhone 4.0 beta 2, and the camera doesn’t work on it. That’s another blog.

So basically, this is like a theme park, except it’s kind of the olden days. I don’t know what year exactly, but something in the 1800’s I think…

Brownhills residents are being asked to make history by digging out their old family photographs. A project to develop the area’s online archives, entitled Make Brownhills History, gets under way at Brownhills Library on Wednesday 5 May between 10am and 12pm.

The project wants people with snaps showing the Brownhills of yesteryear to bring their photos along to the centre to be scanned and recorded by staff, allowing the scanned image to be placed in an online archive.

“We want to develop this archive so that in 10 or 15 years or so, we can see not just what Brownhills looked like but what life was really like,” said Ruth Vyse, Local History Centre manager…

A group of over-fifties will be joining forces with local young people in a project to trace the history of the Blakenall, Leamore and Bloxwich areas. The Know Your Place project launches on 20 April between 3pm and 5pm at Blakenall Community Centre.

The Know Your Place project has been made possible by a grant of £44,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The plan, drawn up by Walsall’s Local Community 50 Plus Forum, is to explore the background of an area that has had strong traditional connections with miners, bargees and travellers. It is also hoped that a local history society will be set up as one of the results of the project.

Commenting for the Heritage Lottery Fund, Head of HLF West Midlands Anne Jenkins said: “We are delighted that this exciting project will bring these generations together to discover the diverse stories behind their communities, and provide an opportunity for young and old to learn about their history.”

Both Walsall Council and Walsall’s Local History Centre will be involved in the scheme that is seen as a way to foster an understanding of the local area’s heritage and help bring together people from more isolated communities. The project also sets out to bridge different cultures and faiths and encourage healthy activities and wellbeing.

Taking their starting point as the 1920s, Know Your Place volunteers will carry out a series of interviews and run workshops and special events, encouraging older residents to share their memories. A number of trips will take place to locations such as Dudley’s Black Country Museum, the Stafford Archives and the Cannock Mining Museum to help in the collection of information.

Stories, photographs and other documents gathered will be used to create a website that will provide a resource for local schools and also encourage the public to find out more about their own family histories.

For Local Community 50 Plus Forum, Chairperson Flo Smith said: “The forum is really pleased and excited to have the opportunity to delivery a local history project that will benefit our community”.

Elements of the Anglo-Saxon hoard of treasure discovered near Brownhills could be exhibited in the Walsall borough. Walsall’s Museums Service is working with local authorities in Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham, Lichfield and Tamworth with a view to housing some of the treasure for public display. Criticism has been pointed at Walsall Council for not immediately declaring its interest in the Hoard, despite it being discovered just metres from the borough boundary…
