Walsall have decided against the introduction of a ‘singing section’ at The Banks’s Stadium after the idea received a thumbs-down from a survey of supporters.

Following a Fans’ Forum last month, at which the notion was mooted, the club carried out further research into the supporters’ appetite for a singing section within the lower tier of the Floors-2-Go Stand, the area where traditionally the noisiest section of the home support is gathered…

Walsall today offered ‘free’ season tickets to children and teenagers in a bid to halt a slump in attendances at the Banks’s Stadium.

The Saddlers announced a freeze in season ticket prices for the third successive year as they look to boost crowds that have dipped to a league average of just 3,799 with the team struggling this term.

And they will offer free football to under-18s for the 2011-12 season in a scheme they claim is a Football League first…

Saddlers succumb to Swindon

Walsall suffered a disappointing day at the Banks’s Stadium, as a jittery start cost them dearly.

The Saddlers named an unchanged side from the defeat at Rochdale, with Macken and Byfield partners up front. Nicholls returned to the side on the bench.

Walsall made a very scrappy and hesitant start, as Swindon looked dangerous on the attack. It took them just 10 minutes to take the lead, as Sheehan found space from the left and put the ball sweetly past goalkeeper Brain. 0-1. The under fire goalkeeper had an overall much more positive performance than recent matches…

I left for my summer holidays after the Plymouth win feeling relatively optimistic, given a much improved performance, three points and what appeared to have been a couple of good signings. I came back to find that we contrived to lose every game in my absence! What that amounts to is, of course, a club at crisis point, as points and fans drain away.

Granted there have been a couple of good signs, as Jon Macken doesn’t seem to have forgotten where the net is during his various troubles since leaving Preston and Darren Byfield has managed to break his goal drought (and how!), but the problems we are suffering seem to be exactly the same as at the start of the season (and, to be fair, last season), namely a central midfield which is as weak as dishwater and neither creates anything for the strikers, nor gives adequate cover to the defence.

Captain Darren Byfield today pleaded with Walsall’s wavering fans to stick with the Saddlers and raise the roof at Saturday’s clash with Swindon.

The Saddlers attendances have failed to break the 4,000 barrier in their last three home matches and Byfield has now launched an impassioned appeal for supporters to keep the faith…

Blink and you’ll miss them but it’s not a magic trick – Walsall’s disappearing thousands are real. Since their final season in the Championship in 2003-04 the Saddlers’ gates have plunged by almost 4,000.

The question of the declining numbers refuses to go away and despite their highest league finish in six years – since those heady Championship days – it is unlikely attendances will spike next season…

Darlo Saddler Walsall Web-Fans 16 Mar 10

A constant topic of conversation among Saddlers fans over the last couple of seasons has been the way in which our home attendances have slumped badly and what the reasons for this phenomenon might be. Several theories have been mooted, from the unpopularity of the current regime to the cost of admission to the largely tedious football we’ve had to endure. We go to the match in the hope of seeing our team score a few goals with the logical outcome of a victory if all goes well so, if we play attacking, exciting football – remember that? – goals will flow and the stayaway fans will return. It’s that simple. Or is it?
