Walsall defender Andy Butler has apologised for his gaffe which sparked another defeat for the Saddlers. The stand-in captain’s slip on Saturday allowed Kevin Kilbane to equalise in Huddersfield’s 4-2 win at the Banks’s Stadium.

He was also outmuscled by Jamie McCombe for the Terriers’ second while David Bevan’s poor kick handed the visitors a fourth in injury time…

Bescot Stadium, Saturday 15 Jan 11, KO 3pm

Two successive away draws under caretaker Dean Smith have steadied the ship, hauling the Saddlers off the bottom of the table and reducing the safety gap to eight points (realistically, with goal difference). What that means, however, is that we must start winning our home games.

Nice that we get off to a difficult start, then, against fourth placed Huddersfield Town. You also have to remember, of course, that the Saddlers now have the astonishing record of having gained more points away from the Bescot than at home this season. (3 home wins against 2 away wins and 4 away draws). This is not going to be easy then.

Smith has chosen the same side for both his games in charge so far, so the only real possibility of changes is if Walker and Taundry pass fitness tests and if he decides to rest Patterson.

One man who will be relishing the prospect of the game will be former Huddersfiled man Andy Butler…

Walsall v Huddersfield

Saddlers caretaker boss Dean Smith has urged Walsall fans to back his men to the hilt when free-scoring promotion chasers Huddersfield visit the Banks’s Stadium on Saturday.

Walsall have picked up just nine points out of a possible 30 at home this season – the worst record in League One and part of the reason the fans turned on boss Chris Hutchings…

Express & Star 30 Oct 10

Walsall sunk back to the bottom of League One after a limp defeat against 10-man Huddersfield.

The Saddlers are five points from safety following just one win in 12 games, despite the hosts playing 66 minutes with 10 men after Alan Lee’s dismissal.

Travelling supporters again chanted for manager Chris Hutchings’ dismissal during a lifeless second-half, where Walsall failed to put their hosts under pressure…

I don’t think anyone actually got the answer right to the perennial question on the message board of “when’s Jimmy coming back”. Well, the answer, surprisingly, turned out to be the 29th October 2010!

It can only be seen as a humiliating admission by Chris Hutchings that he got the goalkeeping position completely wrong in the Summer, to have to bring in the former Walsall hero, and, considering Brain’s indecisions and lack of command of his area, it can only make you wonder what Bevan is like. However, for better or worse, Jimmy Walker is back on the books and waiting for clearance to see if he can go straight into the squad for the trip to Huddersfield tomorrow. Hutchings’ quote on the matter was “”He has the experience that we need at this time. He’s a strong character and an organiser, the type of person who will get people going.” I hate to tell you Chris, but I knew we would need that experience and organisational ability at the start of the season – and we still do need it in midfield. Let’s hope for another signing there…

UptheSaddlers 14 Apr 10 Passion and commitment
Losing 4-3 would ordinarily seem to be a downer, especially when you lead 3-2 away from home with only a minute or two left on the clock. Not this time, according to the fans who were there. From the messageboard, Belgian Saddler sums up…
