More than 296,000 school days were sacrificed to term-time holidays in the Black Country and Staffordshire in a year.
Holiday firms were today criticised for charging “exorbitant” prices during the school holidays leading to parents booking breaks during term time. Deals advertised on a price comparison website today list the cost of a one-week trip to Tenerife from Monday, October 18, as £263 per person.
In Walsall 30,620 days were lost to holiday..

For years I have maintained that September 1 is the REAL New Year, the time when resolutions should be made. How many of us make solemn pledges to ourselves as the final bars of Olde Lange Syne fade into the ether, only to abandon them by mid January?
And January is such a depressing month to be making big changes: you are still coming down from the heady excitement of Christmas (avoiding all bills until February) and it feels so very, very flat. It’s dark, dank, gloomy. Usually wet or snowy. It is not the time to be planning dramatic weight loss.
So, September 1 it is for me.

August bank holiday weekend is bittersweet for me. Whilst other holiday Mondays in spring seem like markers, milestones toward a summer full of promise, warm days, green leaves and long rides, this one always seems to mark the closing of the season.
The nights are already drawing in, the fields have gone from the lush bright greens and golds of growth to the dusty raffia browns of stubble. The leaves start to age and turn, and the hedgerows, field margins and scrubs are loaded with a rich natural bounty of ripening fruits, seeds and nuts…

DON’T despair – summer’s not over
That was the reassuring message from Birmingham weather experts after the Midlands endured more than a week of torrential rain.
Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers said the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend was going to be “really quite pleasant” in most places – with the prospect of even better weather to come next month.
