It’s our old friends from Hartlepool this weekend, but it looks like those going to the game will end up having a competition with the locals to see who cries the most into their beer.

We may think we’re in a bad way, but the ‘Pools, having escaped relegation by the narrowest of margins last season after a points deduction for fielding an ineligible player, seem to be hell bent on achieving that distinction this time around…

Julian Gray’s freak goal set Walsall up for a victory over Hartlepool that kept their hopes of finishing 10th alive. The winger’s fourth of the season put the Saddlers in control – after Neil Austin cleared the ball against his face – before Roy O’Donovan beat the offside trap to level on 27 minutes.

But Troy Deeney’s 14th of the season just a minute later handed the initiative back to the hosts, before Richard Taundry wrapped up the points in the second half…

The Saddlers’ best home performance of the season brought a sparkling 3-1 victory over Hartlepool in a splendid afternoon’s entertainment at the Banks’s Stadium, which did much to still the voices of dissent rumbling around Bescot of late…
