Walsall Gymnastics Club is celebrating its first medal win in a regional competition – just 15 months after it opened its doors.

Olivia Weaver, aged 14, scooped a silver medal in the Level 3 West Midlands championships at North Solihull Sports Centre after impressing with her routines on uneven bars, beam, vault and floor.

It is the first time that the not-for-profit club, which opened its Marlow Street premises in August last year after relocating from Sutton Coldfield, has entered a gymnast for a major competition.

Sue Price, head coach at the club, which is the only one in the borough that has permanent Olympic-standard equipment at its premises, said she was thrilled that they had notched up their first medal success already.

“She had to complete to some quite complex moves and has worked really hard on her routines, so we were so pleased when she won the silver medal,” she said.

Olivia, a pupil at Rugby Girls’ School who has practised gymnastics since the age of five, said she was proud of her achievement.

“I knew the other competitors were of a very hard standard, so I couldn’t believe it when I heard I won the silver,” she added.

The British Gymnastics Association-affiliated club runs recreational gymnastic lessons for girls and boys from the age of four on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. There is also a competitive squad that youngsters are invited to if they show potential.

Classes cost £17 per calendar month for one weekly 1½ hour coaching session, although children can enrol for up to three sessions per week if they wish.

Walsall Gymnastics Club members will be donning angel wings in the hope it will help them fly around an 8.5 mile fun run course – and raise cash for extra equipment.

Nicole Hall (14) and Olivia Mansell (11) have been training hard for the Great Midland Fun Run in Sutton Coldfield and hope they can raise enough money for much-needed apparatus at the Marlow Street club.

They will be joined by Steven Preston (37), the father of seven-year-old squad member Lottie-Rose, who has also been training for the event.

Between them, they are hoping to raise £400 for a new safety mat.

The club, which moved to a former industrial unit in Walsall last August, is the only permanent gymnastics facility in the borough that provides both recreational classes for youngsters and squad training for those who show competitive-standard potential.
Although it has Olympic-standard equipment, including uneven bars, beam and vault, it is keen to upgrade its existing apparatus.

Head coach, Sue Price, said: “It costs such a lot of money to run the club and ensure the gymnasts have the best equipment, so I am really grateful to Nicole, Olivia and Steven for their efforts to enter the fun run for us.”

Anyone interested in finding information about training times at Walsall Gymnastics Club should visit the webiste or telephone Jayne Dolan on 07933 627 797 or club secretary Anna Tarrant on 01922 454 334.

Walsall’s only permanent gymnastics facility is looking for a cheerleading group to make its home at its centre.

Sue Price, head coach of Walsall Gymnastics Centre, in Marlow Street, said the 6,000 sq ft space was an ideal venue for squads as it had a sprung tumble track and large area on which to practise.

Cheerleading is now affiliated to the British Gymnastics Association, which has led to the Gymnastics Centre wanting to offer the discipline to current members ‒ and to anyone else who may be interested.

It is seeking a qualified cheerleading coach, with or without an existing group of their own, to train at the centre.
“There are a couple of evening a week, and also a Sunday, when the centre could be used for cheerleading and we would love to have a group train here, the facilities are ideal for tumbling and acrobatics.” said Mrs Price.

The non-profit making club, which is also affiliated to the BGA, opened last summer. Run by volunteer coaches, it offers classes, from recreational to competitive standard, to boys and girls from the age of four.

Walsall Gymnastics Centre, in Marlow Street, Walsall, is fully equipped with Olympic standard equipment, including asymmetric bars, vault, beams, floor area and sprung tumble track. The non-profit making club, which is affiliated to the British Gymnastics Association, will be open to all boys and girls from the age of four and will offer classes for all abilities – from recreational gym to competitive standard.

Run entirely by volunteers, the coaches – all of whom are qualified and have more than 100 years’ experience between them – have trained youngsters to competitive level.

Head coach Sue Price said: “In the past, our coaches have found themselves having to turn away children due to lack of training time or facilities.

“Since coming to our new permanent facility in Walsall we are thrilled to be able to provide gymnastic coaching to more children and to give talented gymnasts the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

“The extra space, equipment and training time we now have will enable us to offer children the opportunity to participate in gymnastics for fun, to keep fit or to progress to competitive gymnastics.”
