Bosses at Walsall Council have agreed a modest increase in charges for burials, cremations and weddings that take place in the borough.

Internment fees for adults over 16 will rise from £806 to £826. The cost for under 16’s remains unchanged at £114. The fee for the right to erect a headstone not exceeding 3` will go up from £240 to £246. Use of the chapel and organ per half hour will go up by £4 to £177. The fee for internment in the Babies Memorial Garden remains unchanged at £114 as long as the coffin does not exceed 3`8” by 1`8”.

The cost of a marriage licence will increase from £1,129 to £1,157 and the fee for child naming at a registry office will rise by £2 to £87.

Hard up Walsall Council are hoping the increases in fees for births, deaths and marriages will generate an income of £55,000 which will be set against an annual loss of £175,000 in bereavement services. The loss is blamed on the decrease in the numbers of deaths.

The decision taken by Walsall Council’s ruling cabinet , struggling to find over £11 million in cuts and increased council tax, was approved on Wednesday night.
