Neil Kitching has set his Rushall Olympic players a target of nine wins from their final 16 league fixtures to secure a play-off berth.

The Pics are among a dozen sides still dreaming of promotion. After their midweek win at Belper, Rushall lie in sixth place, just three points behind third-placed Kidsgrove with a game in hand…

Bescot Stadium, Sat 26 Feb, KO 3pm

A chance to get out of the bottom four presents itself on Saturday, with a game against play off chasing Rochdale. The team will certainly want to get last week’s defeat at Colchester out of their systems and get back on the good run which had seen confidence rise so much.

Of course, expectations have now been raised, with the team just one point from safety, so it was good to see the squad further strengthened this week with the acquisition of Argentinian midfielder Emmanuel Ladesma…

Walsall have today swooped to land Argentinian attacking midfielder Emmanuel Ledesma on a short term deal until the end of the season.

Ledesma signs after being spotted playing for Brighton reserves earlier this season. He was offered a trial with Walsall and has been successful in negotiating a move to the Banks’s. He is expected to make his debut against Rochdale on Saturday, subject to international clearance…

Heavy rain forces postponement

Charlie Blakemore fears Chasetown’s reputation as giant-killers will only make their task to reach the FA Trophy semi-finals even more difficult tomorrow.

The Scholars have enjoyed their best-run in non-league’s premier knockout competition after ousting four higher league sides.

And tomorrow they face another top-tier side when Mansfield Town visit for a sell-out quarter-final clash…

Respect for referees has been known to be as fragile as Walsall’s survival hopes.

Criticism, abuse and the constant questioning of their authority makes for a lonely profession.

The dwindling numbers of grass roots officials is testimony to that, but the challenge doesn’t faze Walsall skipper Andy Butler…

So the misfortune of others this week has seen the gap to safety for the Saddlers reduced to one solitary point.

The boardroom conversation at Plymouth that concluded with ‘Gentlemen, things are desperate, there’s only one man who can sort this out . . . Peter Ridsdale’ must have truly been something to behold.

While their fate has given us a huge helping hand, I do sympathise with the plight of Argyle fans who are probably now worrying as much about whether they will have to be starting up AFC Plymouth as they are about relegation…

Michael Beardmore Advertiser 24 Feb 11

Saddlers boss Dean Smith has implored his side not to let ‘one blip’ spoil their survival bid as League One surprise packages Rochdale come to town this weekend.

Walsall lost 2-0 at Colchester last Saturday in possibly their worst display since Smith took charge at the turn of the year.

That meant they were still three points off safety – until, that is, Plymouth Argyle were deducted ten points by the Football League on Monday for going into administration…

Darren Byfield returned to full training this week for the first time since September.

The Saddlers’ skipper has been laid-low with a knee injury for five months but, after completing a course of sugar injections recently, can finally see light at the end of a very long tunnel…

Jimmy Walker today warned Walsall to forget survival talk until they have saved their season.

The stopper still fears the drop despite a stunning sequence of events which have pushed the Saddlers to the brink of the League One safety line.

Plymouth’s 10-point deduction on Monday moved Walsall up to fourth bottom, where they stayed after Dagenham’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield last night…
