Walsall boss Dean Smith hopes ‘wildcard’ Argentinian signing Emmanuel Ledesma can provide the flair to steer the Saddlers to League One safety.

The 22-year-old former Genoa midfielder was unable to gain international clearance in time to feature on Saturday as an uninspired Walsall side fought out a dour goalless draw with Rochdale…

36 year-old defender dies after long illness

The former Tottenham and Wolves defender Dean Richards, whose £8.1m transfer to Spurs set a record for the highest amount paid for a player with no senior international caps, has died after a long-term illness.

Richards, who also played for Bradford and Southampton, was forced to retire from the game in March 2005 after suffering from dizzy spells and headaches while at White Hart Lane…

Arsenal 1 Birmingham 2

Obafemi Martins pounced on a calamitous Arsenal defensive mix-up two minutes from time as Birmingham City claimed their first major silverware since 1963 by winning the Carling Cup at Wembley.

Martins, on loan from Rubin Kazan, took advantage of a fatal communication breakdown between Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and defender Laurent Koscielny to strike the late blow that clinched victory for Blues boss Alex McLeish and his men, sending their supporters into ecstasy…

Pics let slip

Rushall squandered a two-goal lead at the interval against fellow Division One South play-off hopefuls Brigg – conceding four poor second-half goals to crash to defeat.

To add insult to injury Rushall also ended the contest with 10-men following the dismissal of Mitchell Tolley.

The Pics led after only six minutes when home defender Scott Hellewell collided with Chris Sterling and the referee pointed to the penalty spot…

Walsall manager Dean Smith has hailed the input of his closest advisors Jon Whitney and Chris Nicholl into the team’s recent revival as they battle to beat relegation from League One.

In particular, the Saddlers boss appreciates his aides’ willingness to pipe up when they think he is wrong.

When Smith took over as manager in January, Whitney immediately stepped up from physio to assistant boss while Nicholl soon came back into the fold as defending coach.

Football: League 1

Michael Beardmore Express & Star 26 Feb 11

Walsall picked up a point in their battle against the drop in a dour stalemate with Rochdale where both keepers were hardly troubled in an affair that had plenty of passion but very little quality.

The Saddlers were the better side in the first half but Jason Price just failed to connect with Tom Williams’ cross as an empty net beckoned.

Alex Nicholls had a decent chance when a weak punch from Owain Fon Williams fell at his feet on the edge of the area but he sent his first-time volley straight at the keeper…
