It wasn't comfortable nor pretty...
Goalkeeper Jimmy Walker’s brilliance again saved Walsall from an embarrassing FA Cup exit against Fleetwood as the Saddlers sneaked through.
Reuben Reid’s double set up a second round trip to Torquay despite a woeful performance from the hosts, where they were second best for much of the game.
The result, only the Saddlers’ second win since August – keeps them in the cup but the performance still left questions over manager Chris Hutchings’ future…

Tonight, Walsall take on Fleetwood Town in an FA Cup First Round replay. Around five minutes before kick-off I will herald the arrival of the teams onto the pitch by asking the fans to welcome the players from Fleetwood Town and “the Pride of the Midlands, the Suuuperrrr Saaaaaaaaddlleeeeeeeerrrrrrrrs”.
The phrase has become something of a catch-phrase; but it’s not my own work. The “Super Saddlers” is a long standing moniker; and I stole the “Pride of the Midlands” from the announcer at Home Park who announces the arrival of Plymouth Argyle onto the pitch with the phrase “The Pride of the West Country and the Best in the West”…

Caught in a nightmare
Bescot Stadium, Tue 16 Nov 10, KO 7:45pm
Apparently there is an important match on Tuesday evening, where our multi-talented professional football and management team will attempt to halt the seemingly irreversible decline of Walsall FC with a lucky, hard working, 10 man performance againt the un-lucky Fleetwood Town.
There are rumours circulating that we may attempt to get 3 players sent off from the kick-off to get ourselves a boost and improve our chances of winning three-fold – whether this maverick plan will be implemented by our manager remains to be seen…

Draw salvaged
Jimmy Walker’s heroics saved Walsall FA Cup embarrassment as the 10-man Saddlers clung on.
The veteran goalkeeper produced stunning saves to twice deny Nathan Pond, before a superb reaction stop from Lee Thorpe in the second-half.

The Saddlers travel to Highbury (no, not that one) today, a tough test against Fleetwood Town ahead. It’s the FA Cup First Round Proper, famous for its cup upsets and David versus Goliath ties.
It would be a tough game in normal circumstances, let alone our unenviable record thus far not only in the league but also in the cups. We exited both the Carling Cup and JPT in the First Round, whilst we are marginal favourites against Fleetwood who ply their trade in the Blue Square Premier…

Fleetwood Town v Walsall
Under-fire Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has vowed the Saddlers will fight to the death to avoid an upset at Fleetwood in the FA Cup.
The manager is on the brink and defeat against the Blue Square Premier outfit tomorrow could end his 22-month reign at the Banks’s Stadium.
The Saddlers have crashed out of the Carling Cup and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in the first round this season and an FA Cup run could reignite the campaign…
