Walsall Labour Party 26 Feb 11

Walsall Tories have passed a budget which only promises more pain for residents and communities.

Conservative councillors pushed through a budget that will result in the loss of 430 jobs while refusing to reveal when, and on which services the axe will fall.

Walsall Labour group leader Cllr Tim Oliver said the Conservatives are hiding the true scale of the cuts to avoid voters’ anger during May’s local elections…

Dozens of West Midlands Police officers have fought a controversial move to make them retire after completing 30 years of service, figures revealed today.

The plan has affected 189 officers who would have served for 30 years or more by March 31 this year.

The move, which was approved in December, is part of the force’s plan to save £123 million over the coming years…

More than 430 jobs are to go as Walsall Council aims to save £23.5m over the next year.

The figure includes 102 compulsory redundancies and the same number of voluntary redundancies at the Conservative-controlled authority. A total of 138 posts are vacant and the remaining jobs have been relocated.

Council leader Mike Bird said…

For Walsall Tories in general to try and take credit for the council tax freeze is pure political opportunism.

We all know central government froze the council tax as a political gesture as it would have been awful to see cuts and at the same then see council tax rises… …and unlike other councils it is not clear where the cuts will actually fall…

I’ve just spotted this article in the ‘New Satesman’, a lengthy and thoughtful piece about youth unemployment and the state of Brownhills. Please read it.

Note the amusing error about the market days, and our MP, Richard Shepherd, commenting on the lack of young people visiting his surgeries. It might help if he actually held some here, instead of pandering solely to those in Aldridge who safely return him to parliament term-on-term. It’s quite clear from the piece that the research didn’t stray too far from the MP and his supporters…

The unemployment rate in the West Midlands has crept nearer to 10 per cent after a further 28,000 people joined the list.

There are now 261,000 people out of work in the region – a rate of 9.8 per cent – which is more than anywhere else in the UK aside from the North East, which has a 10.2 per cent rate.

Across the UK, joblessness jumped by 44,000 in the final three months of 2010 to just under 2.5 million, a rate of 7.9 per cent…

West Midlands fire chiefs said they had been “shafted” by the Government in the spending cuts. The service will lose £6.7 million from its budget this year – but bosses warned that in three years’ time its budget could shrink by as much as £30 million.

At a meeting of the fire authority yesterday, members were told they would be able to find this year’s savings without any increase in its share of the council tax and through natural wastage and efficiencies…

Around 120 staff at Walsall Council are facing compulsory redundancy, it was revealed today.

Only 165 members of staff applied to voluntarily leave the authority. In total, the council is axing 421 jobs — 187 of which are already vacant.

Council bosses are now talking to the most at-risk workers in departments such as regeneration and planning…

Redundancies are set to increase “sharply” in the next few months, with most public sector employers planning to cut jobs, according to new report.

A survey of 750 employers showed that staffing levels were heading for a fall after holding up relatively well last year.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said more employers were planning to cut staff than recruit new employees…
