The managing partner of Walsall solicitors, Enoch Evans, has marked his 25th year within the firm by cycling 160 miles for charity.

David Evans cycled the impressive distance from London to Walsall raising just over £2,500 for Midlands Air Ambulance, an amount that he handed over to flight crew at Cosford air base on 23rd February.

Dr Matthew Dugas from Sycamore House Surgery, Birmingham Road, Walsall and an old friend of David’s, Martin Newhouse joined the legal partner on the cycle ride which was completed in just two days last September…

In-tandem Management Solutions Ltd (i-tms) is organising a cycle challenge on behalf of Walsall Hospice and had been promised a minibus and driver by Walsall Community Transport. Sadly, due to recent cuts, the minibus is no longer available which leaves us in a bit of a spot – with only five weeks to go until the ride.

“Why do you need a minibus?” I hear you ask. Well, I’m riding the 88 miles on a tandem and will be joined by a number of people who will ride a leg or two each. While not on the tandem, these people will need to be following us round and a minibus is the perfect solution.

We want to create a fun atmosphere while awaiting turns on the tandem and the minibus will be the ideal place for people to sit and keep warm and have a bit of fun. In addition, if we find other cyclists have a problem and are unable to continue, they can have their bike picked up by the broom wagon, and ride round in the minibus.

So, what we are looking for is a small minibus and driver for the day (probably 10+ hours), and a sponsor to help us pay for fuel.

If you, or someone you know could help us, or you want more information, please contact Graham on 07814 125053

‘You never forget to ride a bicycle’, the old saying goes. Unless, it seems, you are a police officer who uses a cycle while on patrol.

West Midlands Police has issued bobbies with a lengthy online guide on how to ride a bike. It has instructions in cycling downhill, stating in capital letters “DO NOT PUT YOUR FEET DOWN TO SLOW DOWN YOUR CYCLE”…

Spotted in Walsall’s new flagship Tesco store on Wednesday night. Children’s bikes, just begging to be bought as Christmas gifts, and at quite attractive prices, to boot. Just one snag: don’t follow the store’s assembly examples.

Display bike with forks assembled backwards… front brake cable swinging uncoupled in free air, brakes not even in allignment with the wheels. Wheels, tyres, cranks all made of plastic…

I like to cycle when it snows. There’s something magical about it – and since I’m rocking snow tyres, black ice, frozen ruts and compacted snow are no problem to ride on.

On Saturday afternoon, I took a ride across Cannock Chase from Hednesford, down to Birches Valley, up Penkridge Bank, round by the old rifle range, and down Abraham’s Valley, through Seven Springs and into Little Haywood, returning via Rugeley, Longdon and Burntwood. I saw hardly anyone on the Chase, and only a handful of cars in the rural back lanes, which were pretty much impassible to all but four-wheel drive vehicles…

A Country Park, consisting of orchards, picnic areas, meadow land, grazing areas and equestrian and cycling routes could be developed to link countryside areas of Walsall with woodland sites in West Bromwich, Birmingham, Wolverhampton and beyond.

Well, it’s happened. I always dread this time of year, from the moment the longest day passes, I feel the inexorable grip of the nights closing in.

I don’t mind the winter – the new season brings new scenery, different rides and seasonal challenges. After all, I’m no fairweather cyclist, and love riding in the cold, frosty lanes of a hard season. I just mourn the loss of light, when every ride ends in darkness…

Like most outdoor people, we cyclists are pretty much obsessed with the weather. Throughout the week I keep an eye on the forecasts and plan rides around the direction the wind is blowing. Although I’m no fair weather merchant, it’s always sensible to be aware of the prevailing conditions.

It was for this reason that I was delighted to discover an amateur weather station was operating locally to Brownhills, just over the A5 in Hammerwich…

Why is it that most moms (for it IS mostly moms, round here at least) are simply incapable of delivering their children to school and drive normally at the same time… and personally I think that old people should be subject to a curfew.

One of the advantages of working from home is that you can be flexible around when you take your breaks and do your chores (another is walnut and date cake with your mug of tea).

So, having got up early to handle a number of ridiculous emails from the Dementors that I work with, I decided to hit Waitrose at opening time and buy a few things before returning for back to back telcons. Don’t you just love Fridays? This is work’s way of trying to remind you that weekends are a reward, rather than a right.

What I had failed to factor in to my plan to “just nip out” was that it would coincide with a) the school run, b) peak hour for oldies, and, c) it was in the middle of a gale and rain storm (we seem to be having weather similar to that at Celtic Manor and the Ryder Cup). Consequently, I soon became frustrated and soaked through…
