The euphoria of the Sydney Test celebrations was tinged with sadness for one member of the victorious touring party.

The previous day Paul Collingwood had announced it was to be his last Test match and as he celebrated with the rest of the squad, kissing his cap badge in front of the barmy army he knew this was the last time.

Shep or Colly was the cricketing equivalent of Kevin Keegan. Not the most naturally gifted batsman nor bowler, but someone who applied himself fully and maximised every ounce of the talent he had to reach the very highest points of the game…

Eng (513) beat Aus (98 and 258) by innings & 157 runs

The Ashes remain in England’s moral, as well as literal, custody until 2013 after an emphatic innings victory in Melbourne.

England have retained the Ashes on Australian soil for the first time since 1986, an era that now seems washed in sepia, albeit with colourful flashes of Ian Botham’s mullet. Their victory here by an innings and 157 runs was a neat echo of the win Mike Gatting’s side had on the same ground 24 years and a day ago, when Andrew Strauss, England’s victorious leader, and another Middlesex captain, was just nine years old…

When Steve Waugh handed over the captaincy of the Australian cricket team to Ricky Ponting in 2004 he handed over a golden legacy and some magnificent players. But that legacy, and the decline and retirement of those players also meant Waugh was handing Punter a poisoned chalice too.

When Waugh’s team thrashed England in 2002/3 the captain was able to call on a host of excellent world class players including Justin Langer, Matty Hayden, Damien Martyn, Adam Gilchrist, Gillespie even, Ponting himself and two of the best players ever to grace the game, Glenn MCGrath and the brilliant Shane Warne. Just those last two would have been enough to elegant even a mundane outfit into a top class side…

…for tomorrow, who knows?

On Wednesday night England prepare to defend the Ashes and they can go in to the game with some confidence. They are up against what is clearly the weakest Aussie team for some considerable time.

For the best part of two decades the Australians have dominated Test match cricket. Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Ricky Ponting are players who rank alongside the best the game has ever seen, and a supporting cast consisting of the likes of Langer, Gilchrist, Martyn and Hayden made them virtually unbeatable…

Survival secured in spite of early scares

STREETLY FIRST XI (232-9) drew with HIGHWAY (159-9)

Streetly travelled to league runners-up Highway needing points to secure their Premier status in a very tight division – and got their wish with a winning draw.

Asked to bat first in very friendly bowling conditions, Streetly lost their very strong middle order batsmen and were in serious trouble at 57-5.

C Hughes (32) and O Crutchley (38) gave star of the show opener S Eastham (96) great support and, backed up by the tail, got Streetly a very good score of 232-9…

Walsall captain Paul Wicker led his club’s uphill battle against relegation with a superb 101, but nonetheless, it was Kenilworth Wardens, who edged closer to safety, following a battling draw at Gorway.

Lichfield Blog 3 Sep 10

The Diocese of Lichfield has lifted the 60th Church Times Cricket Cup after beating Bath and Wells in a closely fought contest.

It was Lichfield’s first time in the final of the competition and they faced a tough test against a Bath and Wells side who have yet to win the trophy, despite yesterday’s appearance being their seventh in the final…

Solihull News 2 Sep 10

Moseley turned around a miserable performance against title chasing Shrewsbury to seal a winning draw against fellow strugglers Walsall and keep their heads above the Birmingham League Premier Division drop zone.

A transformed Moseley had Walsall on the ropes during their Bank Holiday Monday meeting but couldn’t prise out their last pair who survived six overs to secure a draw…

Nawaz efforts not enough as Bloxwich miss a big chance

PENKRIDGE (186-8) drew with BLOXWICH FIRST XI (115-8)

Bloxwich’s hopes of closing the gap on the Staffs One leading pack suffered a blow with a losing draw at fellow promotion hopefuls Penkridge.

On a day when many games – including the clash between leaders Wednesbury and fourth-placed Beacon – fell victim to the weather, Bloxwich were unable to take full advantage…

Bowling stars help Rushall escape from relegation zone

ARMITAGE (167-9) lost to RUSHALL FIRST XI (168-3) by seven wickets

Rushall claimed crucial points in their bid to steer clear of the Staffs Two danger zone with a victory at struggling Armitage.

In one of the few Staffs League games to be completed due to the weather, Matt Jones (4-48) and Warren Foster (4-78) were Rushall’s bowling stars…
