Midland engineering giant GKN has swung back into a profit after seeing sales increase by 22 per cent.
The helicopter designer, manufacturer, and systems integrator saw a big rebound by its automotive division in the first three months of 2010, which helped trading profits jump to £84 million from a loss of £12 million in the same period last year. That meant a pre-tax profit of £71 million.
Group sales rose 22 per cent to £1.31 billion with constant currency sales up by 26 per cent.

GKN Driveline’s plant in Chester Road, Erdington, already shed 86 employees in February and a further 53 job losses were announced on Wednesday. The company has already said its forge facility at Hamstead would close by the end of the year and its car parts facility in Walsall would close by mid 2010 – more than 600 people are expected to be made redundant across all of its sites…
