The future of closed community pubs has been given a boost after the Government pledged to review the rule on ‘restrictive covenants’.
At present, pubs which have closed are prevented from reopening again as public houses or entertainment venues because of a clause which can be used in the sale of a building that restricts its future use by new owners…

Over the holidays I ran into an old acquaintance who is in the pub trade. He works for a large chain of pubs who I ascertained are mainly interested in making profits.
It seems there main method of achieving this is by concentrating on food and providing the right “experience”. Apparently, they have four bands of “dining experience” from a nice steak and chips down the Penn Road Wolverhampton to the burger and chips for yer chavs on the Lichfield Road. Beer, apparently, doesn’t seem to register much on the radar as they only make 35p a pint…

The annual Walsall beer festival is moving venue because of growing costs at its old council-owned home.
Members of the Walsall branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) have agreed to leave the town hall, where around 2,500 people enjoyed last year’s three-day beer festival.
This year’s event, which takes place on April 14-16, will instead be held at Walsall College’s Wisemore Campus, in Littleton Street…

The Rose and Crown in Old Birchills and the Royal Exchange in Bloxwich are bucking the trend of pubs in the area, which have been steadily closing down over the last few years.

The Office of Fair Trading has ruled that the UK’s pub sector is competitive and it has found no evidence of price rigging by the leading pub operators.
The ruling follows a complaint from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) that the so-called “beer tie”, which requires pub lessees to purchase beer solely through their pub-owning company landlord, was anti-competitive.
The OFT concluded the pub sector was competitive overall and it there was no evidence of competition problems having an adverse impact on consumers…

The real ale market is still thriving despite the collapse of two of the region’s best-known brands, according to other brewers in the West Midlands.
Highgate & Davenports brewery went into liquidation last week – with its 20-strong workforce made redundant immediately – sending shockwaves through an industry that has seen a significant upturn in recent years…

The Bell Inn, Market Place, Willenhall was built just after the Great Fire of Willenhall in 1659. It is Grade II-listed, has been empty for more three years and is now in a semi-derelict state. Even with the current rate of pub closures this is one venue that must remain as a pub…

The Campaign for Real Ale is turning to the courts to try to get action on what it calls anti-competitive practices by large pub companies. Camra says pubcos – principally large Midlands firms like Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns – are imposing unfair charges on their tenants at a time when many are struggling to survive. The campaigning organisation made a ‘super complaint’ to the Office of Fair Trading this year but it was rejected…
