Almost 8,000 applicants are chasing 200 places on Network Rail’s apprentice scheme, twice as many as last year, new figures show.
The rail firm said there had been a “massive shift” in the age profile of applicants, with more older people applying for an apprenticeship.

Amey has launched a national Apprenticeship Academy to create 100 new jobs for young engineers working mainly in the rail industry.
