Diocese of Lichfield 4 Feb 11
A Shropshire priest who previously served in Walsall and as diocesan missioner for the whole of Lichfield diocese has been elected to the Archbishops’ Council – the body which, in effect, acts as the charity trustees of the national Church of England institutions.
The Revd Mark Ireland, Vicar of All Saints, Wellington; with St Catherine, Eyton, first joined Lichfield diocese in 1998 as diocesan missioner and team vicar of Walsall; having served for 14 years in Blackburn diocese. He became team leader of the diocese’s mission division and then director of mission and ministry before returning to parish ministry in his current role in 2007…

The manager of my local Tesco is creating a bit of a storm. Apparently he wants to move to Sainsburys.
That’s not the shocking thing – managers do make the switch from time to time back and forth. Nor is it a shock when he says he wants his customers to move with him – every salesman hopes to build up customer loyalty.
No, the real shock is that he expects Tesco to give him some space in his old store so that he can open his branch of Sainsburys there. He says that while his customers want to enjoy the Sainsburys’ experience, they much prefer Clubcard points to Nectar points; and he thinks Tesco is being mean spirited by not allowing his old customers to buy from Sainsburys using Tesco’s existing store.
Of course, you can take this analogy too far…

The Anglican Communion is in crisis – again! In fact, if you read the headlines about the Communion over the past twenty or thirty years it seems to be in perpetual crisis.
But the reality for the more than 77 million people around the world who call ourselves Anglican is very different. On the ground, Anglicans are faithfully putting their faith into action with concerns focused on mission and outreach – at home and overseas – providing support to the poor and downtrodden, bringing comfort to the sick and dying, fighting injustice and maintaining church buildings!
Of course, we’re not all Saint Francis of Assisi, but our concerns are generally more focused on the nitty gritty than the detailed minutiae of how the global Anglican Communion governs itself.
But there are real problems here – and anybody who suggests otherwise is deluding themselves.
This week’s meeting in Dublin…

What did God do when our world froze?
In the cold winters of 1961 and 1963 we were properly snowed in. We were unable to use the car for weeks and the milk had to be delivered by Land Rover. We had to struggle everywhere on foot. The best thing was the ice-skating. We borrowed our parents’ old skates and went exploring on the ponds in the farm land near to our home.
Even more exciting were the hockey matches that the schools held on a large lake which froze over for much of the spring term. So we can’t complain yet that 2010-11 is the worst winter for hundreds of years. The pools are not frozen solid!
Life is more highly geared now…

A popular community church in Little Bloxwich constructed some forty-two years ago as a temporary building looks set to be replaced by a smart, modern, purpose-designed structure if sufficient funds can be raised.
The Holy Ascension Community Project is focusing on a positive future for the small C of E mission church, which is part of Bloxwich Team Parish, and aims to deliver not only a higher quality place of worship, but a new and useful community facility where there is presently none. This will, it is hoped, become a resource that will bring people of the neighbourhood together, cater to their needs and achieve the fellowship of a caring community. But first, an estimated £750,000 needs to be found to fund construction…

The Archbishop of Canterbury has raised fears about the impact of planned Government welfare cuts on a visit to the West Midlands.
He was “very anxious” about Government changes and said housing benefit change may result in “social zoning.” Plans to force the long-term unemployed into unpaid work risked prolonging a “downward spiral of uncertainty, even despair”…

Funnyman Tim Vine was quick to set the informal tone of a Parkinson-style interview with the Archbishop of Canterbury in the hallowed halls of Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium.
“Let’s go straight in with the heavyweight stuff — what’s your favourite firework?” he asked the leader of the Anglican Church in fromt of 400 guests.
But the Most Reverend Rowan Williams was clearly eager to show that Vine was not the only comedian on stage last night.
“I think the wrong answer to that would be a Roman candle,” came his most witty reply…
