Walsall Football Club have joined forces with conservation charity the RSPB to make a difference for the swift, a summer migrant which is declining dramatically across the West Midlands.
The screaming of swifts is a real sign that summer has arrived, but bird numbers arriving in the UK from Sub-Saharan Africa has declined by 47% in the past ten years, and it was recently added to the amber list, meaning it is of serious conservation concern.
“The swift has been part of our logo since we were founded back in 1888 when Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts amalgamated,” explained Assistant Club Secretary, Daniel Mole. ” We feel a particular duty to help protect these enigmatic birds.”

Repair work costing £120,000 is under way at a Sandwell Valley RSPB visitor centre which was devastated by fire just a month ago.

Investigations were under way today into the cause of a fire that devastated a visitor centre at a popular Black Country beauty spot. Flames ripped through part of the visitor centre at the Sandwell Valley RSPB nature reserve in Great Barr after the fire broke out on Saturday morning.
The beauty spot is currently undergoing a £120,000 major refurbishment programme.
