Struggling Walsall climbed off the foot of the League One table as they completed their first double of the season in fine style at Brunton Park.
The Saddlers made it four games without defeat thanks to Matt Gill’s first-half close-range strike and a second-half double from the lively Julian Gray.

The Saddlers will be making the long trek north to Carlisle on Saturday, with a chance of, at last, landing their first double of the season.
The performance on Wednesday night at Notts County was encouraging again and Dean Smith has set the players a target of a two points per game average for the rest of the season.
Nothing like showing ambition, then, as no one in this Division, not even leaders Brighton, have managed that this season.

Carlisle manager Greg Abbott offered resounding support to his under-fire Walsall counterpart Chris Hutchings with a message to unhappy Saddlers fans: “Leave him be”.

Darren Byfield opened for the Saddlers with a second-minute goal as he ran onto Troy Deeney’s flick and shot past Adam Collin. Byfield almost profited from a Richard Keogh slip in the 14th minute but the defender raced back to deny the frontman.
The Blues steadily improved and after Jason Price shot them level from inside the penalty box in the 28 minute.
It seems patently obvious where Walsall’s place in life is. But there could be changes afoot at the club this summer. With one game left of the League One season the Saddlers are in the familiar position of mid-table limbo following Saturday’s draw at Carlisle. But on a positive note they are on the brink of their highest finish in six years and, whatever the off-field grumbles are, that cannot be overlooked…
Walsall continue to finish the season strongly after they returned from Carlisle with one point which should have been three had they taken numerous chances they created in an open, pressure-free game.

Rhys Weston is available for Walsall after coming back from a trial with Motherwell but faces competition from the returning Darryl Westlake and captain Mark Hughes returns from suspension.
Carlisle United have concerns over defenders Ian Harte (stomach) and Danny Livesey (groin). Harte is expected to be fit, but David Raven is on stand-by for Livesey while midfielder Tom Taiwo should recover from an ankle injury.
In last week’s match preview, I did say that end of season games can be boring, with nothing left to play for, for the mid table teams. It seems, however, that the Saddlers are not falling into that particular trap…

Darren Byfield opened for the Saddlers in the 33rd minute and Matty Robson equalised in the 44th. After just four minutes on the pitch, sub Steve Jones restored the Saddlers’ lead 15 minutes from time but Richard Keogh replied with a header in the 90th.
