It might be as good as over on Saturday. Look at it logically, it’s not because it’s a relegation six pointer (which it also is), but because we have to target a team higher up the Division than that.

We are 10 points behind Swindon and 12 behind Tranmere. Both are at home, Swindon to Exeter (13th and with 7 away defeats from 13 games) and Tranmere to Rochdale (9th with 5 away defeats in 13 games). Both would consider those games to be winnable. With our appalling goal difference, even a draw for us and a win for them would leave us 5 wins short of overtaking both. Bristol Evening Post 11 Jan 11

Former Bristol Rovers favourite Aaron Lescott came back to haunt his old club as his first Walsall goal prevented Dave Penney making a winning start to his reign as Pirates manager.

The home side looked set to claim their first league win in 10 games after fighting back from behind to establish a 2-1 lead early in the second half.

But Lescott, who had netted just five times in more than 200 appearances for the Gas, smashed home a late leveller for the visitors to leave his old club still three points adrift of the League One safety zone as the points were shared…

Bristol Rovers 2 Walsall 2

In the context of a normal season a 2-2 draw at Bristol Rovers would go down as a job well done. But after two points from crucial games at Tranmere and Bristol it just doesn’t seem enough.

Last night’s draw lifted the Saddlers off the bottom of League One and moved them to within seven points of safety, but there was a hollow ring to it. Deep down they know it should have been three…

Dean Smith has called on Walsall’s leaky backline to shut up shop as the caretaker manager bids to solve their defensive woes.

The Saddlers have shipped 10 goals in their last three games ahead of tonight’s crunch clash at Bristol Rovers.

They have conceded 42 this season – the joint worst record in the division with Peterborough – to leave their goal difference standing at minus 20 after Saturday’s 3-3 League One draw at Tranmere…
