High-flying Bournemouth downed battling Walsall as the Cherries popped the Saddlers’ four-game unbeaten run.
Michael Symes’ 52nd minute strike condemned the hosts to just their third defeat under manager Dean Smith but left them five points from safety in League One.
However, they almost bagged a valuable point in the fifth minute of injury time when Matt Richards’ free kick hit the underside of the bar…

Not so long ago, I would have regarded Saturday’s home game with Bournemouth as just another fixture to chalk off in the countdown to the merciful release that the end of season 2010/11 would bring, with the following Tuesday’s clash with Dagenham and Redbridge being merely a dour Wooden Spoon decider.
Now – and I’m writing this in hushed tones in a darkened room while no-ones about – I am actually looking forward to the games…

There’s a big test for the improved Dean Smith Saddlers tomorrow, with the visit of high flying Bournemouth – proving that falling into financial difficulties isn’t a permanent disability for even a lower league club and that the appointment of a good manager (the departed Eddie Howe) can mean an awful lot to a side.
The man given the job of taking over from Howe is, of course, former Saddler Lee Bradbury. Bradbury had an eight-match spell with us back in 2003/04 (seven starts, one sub appearance and one goal), and was, briefly, a team-mate of Dean Smith during their playing days at Sheffield Wednesday. The problem with an unbalanced squad is that, if you have one, injuries and suspensions can have a detrimental effect way over the norm. Of course, Chris Hutchings built his squad so well in the Summer, that sort of thing doesn’t effect the Saddlers, does it?
Not half. Off we go on Saturday to play the team with the second best goals for record in the Division at home, with our only specialist left back serving a three game suspension for his leg breaker tackle last week (I don’t buy the “his feet were on the floor” rubbish, it was a straight red if I ever saw one). Into that position will have to go either Lescott, recently dropped from right back through lack of form, to play on his “wrong” side, or Richards, who can play there, but would leave a huge hole in our inadequate central midfield. Great forethought and planning there, Chris…
