School buildings projects scrapped to save £5bn

Hundreds of new school building projects will be scrapped today, saving around £5 billion.

The move, potentially the most controversial cut announced by the Coalition so far, comes as ministers prepare to scrap other projects including new roads and extra railway carriages. Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, will today tell MPs that Labour’s Building Schools for the Future scheme is being wound down…
