Palfrey councillor in court on vote fraud charges
Conservative councillor Mohammed Munir has appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court facing charges concerning electoral fraud along with his son, Ali Hayder Munir. The allegations relate to postal or proxy vote applications in the run-up to the 2008 local elections.
Councillor Munir has denied 11 charges of providing false information to the Election Registration Office in Walsall and Ali Hayder Munir did not enter a plea regarding three charges of providing false information and a charge of engaging in an act of applying for proxy vote. The son of the Palfrey councillor is currently on bail for a separate court case before Walsall Magistrates Court where he faces a charge of conspiracy to produce cannabis, an illegal class B drug, over a three year period. He has been ordered to appear before Wolverhampton Crown Court on May 27.
Councillor Munir, who won the Palfrey ward in 2008 with a majority of just 134 votes, has been suspended from the Conservative party. Both men, of Thorpe Road, Caldmore, were bailed until June 18.
