In a joint operation between West Midlands Police and Walsall Trading Standards, more than 400 illegal DVDs and computer games were seized near the newly re-launched Brownhills market on Saturday. A stallholder in his 30`s who was offering hardcore pornography and counterfeit discs has been arrested.

Walsall Council was forced to step in to save the popular market after the previous operator, Spook Erection, could not negotiate a lease deal with the council. Councillor Garry Perry, cabinet member for communities and partnerships said: “Walsall Trading Standards and police are determined to keep counterfeit DVDs, computer games and offensive material from off our streets and Saturday`s action should be a warning to would-be sellers of fake goods that we won`t tolerate this kind of trading.”

Recently, a haul of 1,500 counterfeit DVDs was seized from a house in Walsall.

Fire wrecks Brownhills garden centre store
The YamYam 3 Oct 09
Just days after announcing a secure future, a landmark Brownhills garden centre has been damaged by fire. Grasmere Gardens Garden Centre on Lichfield Road suffered the blaze in the early hours of Friday morning.

A 16ft by 24ft wooden building used by West Midlands Swimming Pools to store chemicals and documents was wrecked by the blaze. As well as smoke and flames, firefighters had to contend with the addition hazard of fumes escaping from several drums of sodium hypochlorite, a chemical used for cleaning swimming pools. There are no reports of any injuries.

Earlier in the week, Grasmere Gardens was bought by Burntwood landscaping business JP Joslin Ltd following the retirement of the present owners. Up to 20 new jobs could be created as the new owners intend to develop the site with a new play area and restaurant.

The future of a much-loved family-run garden centre has been secured following its sale to a Burntwood landscaping business.

garden_centre_pots
Grasmere Garden and Aquatics Centre in Brownhills has been purchased by J.P. Joslin Ltd after fears that the popular facility might close after the current owners, Kate and Arthur Payton, announced their retirement. Buyer Jon Joslin has promised to retain the existing 12 jobs and invest £2 million in developing the business which could create a further 20 jobs. A new craft centre is to be built as well as a children`s play area and the existing coffee shop and swimming pool will be upgraded.

Mr Joslin said: “I have known the previous owner for years and done work with the centre and the staff are like family so all the existing employees will be staying on and there will be about 20 extra jobs created.”

The 5 acre site on Lichfield Road, Brownhills was on the market for £250,000 and the handover is expected to take place in December.

Brownhills market re-launches on Saturday
The YamYam 3 Sep 09
Market traders are getting ready to make a return to Brownhills market on Saturday 5 September whilst Walsall Council regeneration bosses put the finishing touches to the re-launch of the site off Silver Street.

The market, established in 1972, once attracted more than 300 traders from around the country but has steadily declined, particularly in the past 18 months as the effects of the credit crunch set in. For the past 20 years the market was traded with a private company and when contract renewal talks between Walsall Council and operators Spook Erection broke down in June the market was closed.

Since then the loss of the market has had a devastating impact upon High Street shops and other traders in the town, and with questions over the proposed new Tesco development being either abandoned, delayed or scaled down due to the recession, Council bosses quickly realised their error and made a hasty u-turn to save the market.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Walsall Council deputy leader, said: "This is excellent news and shows we are committed to Brownhills. We've worked very hard to resurrect the market and it will be great to see it re-launched".

In response to claims that it will be a return to the bad old days of counterfeit goods and dodgy DVD's Councillor Andrew said: "We want to make it a real top quality market and our markets and trading standards teams will be doing the best they can to do just that".

brwonhills_market
All 80 stalls on the regular Saturday and Tuesday markets are set to be snapped up giving a major boost to the local economy and directly help maintain employment for almost 100 people. Councillor Andrew said: "We want to extend a warm welcome to old traders and shoppers as well as new ones".

The market will re-open with fun attractions including face painting and a stilt walker and it is hoped that local people from around Walsall will get behind the event and show support for the Brownhills community.
